ReSoMal, the only ORS suitable for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition
ReSoMal is intended for the preparation of oral rehydration solution (ORS) exclusively for people suffering from severe acute malnutrition. It must be used under medical supervision in therapeutic nutrition centres and must not be distributed directly to families.
Severely malnourished children commonly have potassium deficiency and various other mineral deficiencies, as well as abnormally high sodium levels. In the event of dehydration, they should therefore be given specific ORS containing less sodium and more potassium, as well as magnesium, zinc and copper.
ReSoMal has been designed to meet this specific need. It should not be administered to well-nourished people or those suffering from cholera (in these cases, conventional ORS should be used, according to the WHO formula).
